Free School Meals
Making sure every pupil can enjoy a healthy meal at school
We know that access to a healthy meal is an important part of a pupil’s ability to learn, grow and feel well.
Free School Meals provide practical support for families and help ensure that pupils can access a healthy meal each day in a way that is discreet, inclusive and part of everyday school life.
If you think your child may be eligible, we encourage you to apply.
Who is Eligible for Free School Meals?
Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals if you receive certain benefits.
This can include:
- Universal Credit
- Income Support
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Child Tax Credit (subject to income thresholds)
Eligibility depends on both the benefits you receive and your household income.
Even if your child does not wish to take a free school meal, we still encourage you to apply if you are eligible. This is because eligibility also allows the school to receive additional funding – the Pupil Premium – which helps us provide further support for pupils.

How to Apply
Applications for Free School Meals are made through East Sussex County Council.
Once your application has been approved, the school will be notified and support will be put in place.

Support at St Richard’s
At St Richard’s, we ensure that support is provided in a discreet and respectful way.
Pupils receiving Free School Meals are able to:
Access school meals as part of the normal lunch system
Take part fully in school activities
Receive additional support where appropriate
Our aim is to ensure that all pupils feel included and supported, regardless of their circumstances.
Pupil Premium
If your child is eligible for Free School Meals, the school may also receive additional funding known as Pupil Premium.
This funding is provided by the government to support pupils and help them achieve their full potential.
At St Richard’s, Pupil Premium funding is used to:
- provide additional academic support
- support wellbeing and inclusion
- help pupils access opportunities across school life
